digital collisions

is an experiment in non-hierarchical communication

is a hypothesis in how the digital world can enhance physical world rather than flatten it

is an attempt to change the way we pay attention to each other and the physical world

Most social algorithms involve an information hierarchy, which reinforces existing systems of power. Information largely stays within physical or digital bubbles; tailored algorithms reinforce preferences and polarization.

Digital Collisions is a new media project about people and their places, seeking contributions from anyone and everyone.

Each contribution should be a work of thoughtful individual expression. Contributions will be collected and published, with the goal of connecting people via unexpected personal expression. It will be like a chance encounter on the street, a street that is perhaps far away. It should feel like a digital collision with a stranger.

We do this to increase the entropy of information we receive, understand each other better, and become more empathetic.

Guidelines

  • Contributions cannot be anonymized: social risk incentivizes constructive communication.

  • All submitted contributions make it to publication. There is no selection or curation, barring basic criteria: 1) no hate speech, 2) no advertising, and 3) 100% human generated content.

  • Instead of being ranked or compared in a linear order, contributions will be linked to a significant physical location of your choice. Viewers should traverse contributions, with a sense of space and place in mind, and allowing themselves to collide with and be changed by the information they encounter.

  • Submissions are open ended, and have historically included: photography, poetry, interview, writing, art. Anything that can be shared via a submission link is possible. Multiple submissions are allowed.

  • Don’t know what to submit? Start small: write 100 words about something you experienced.
